The Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland Joins Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston in January 2013

The Center for Celiac Research (CFCR) currently located at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore will be relocating to Boston, Massachusetts in January 2013 to join Massachusetts General Hospital for Children (MGHfC).  Dr. Alessio Fasano, MD, (left) currently serving as the director of the CFCR, will make the move along with his research, clinical and administrative team. Additionally, CFCR will form a partnership with another leading celiac research center, The Celiac Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), also in Boston. Dr. Fasano will continue to serve as the director of CFCR at MGHfC, as well as their new chief of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition and director of the Mucosal Immunology and Biology Research Center.

“This is a very exciting and promising time for the CFCR and all of our patients and supporters. Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass General) was named America’s best hospital by U. S. News & World Report in July 2012 based on its quality of care, patient safety and reputation in 16 different specialties. Mass General is the original and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, where nearly all of Mass General’s staff physicians serve on the faculty.

By joining with our colleagues at Mass General and the BIDMC Celiac Center, we will become one of the most advanced facilities in the world to care for people with gluten-related disorders. This will allow us to accelerate our goal of finding an alternative treatment/cure for celiac disease and gluten-related disorders.”

The CFCR at Mass General opens on January 7th, 2013.

Two major celiac research centers combining their efforts on celiac research, education and patient care. What a great gift to the celiac and non-celiac gluten sensitive community here in New England and ultimately world-wide. As a current Massachusetts resident I humbly welcome Dr. Fasano and his entire team to Boston!
