Happy New Year Gluten-Free folks! Congratulations to all who have successfully eliminated gluten (or working on it!) for improved health and well-being, whether diagnosed with celiac disease, gluten sensitivity/wheat allergy or living without it for other reasons.
Did you know today, January 8th 2018, is National Gluten-Free Day! So we wish you a happy, healthy NGF-day too! Since it is the start of the New Year many (myself included) will resolve to eat healthier throughout the year and beyond. Choosing fresh, whole foods is pretty straightforward, but when it comes to finding healthy, packaged gluten-free snacks, it isn’t as simple, right? Gluten-Free ‘Junk’ products are abundant (sure that snack may taste good, but is it good-for-you?). Fortunately there are also manufacturers out there offering nutritious and delicious GF goodies … so choose wisely to get the maximum health benefit!
One such company with a healthier line of gluten-free products is The GFB: Gluten Free Bar (GFB). Established in 2010 by two brothers from Grand Rapids who, according to the GFB website bio, “definitely don’t do well with gluten”. Brothers Marshall and Elliot fulfilled their dream of manufacturing high protein, gluten-free products for the GF community, first in a tiny shared GF kitchen and now in a 29,000 SF dedicated gluten-free facility using sustainable business practices. GFB offers a line of protein Bars, Bites & Power Breakfasts (hearty oatmeal) which are certified Gluten-Free, certified non-GMO, certified Vegan, certified Kosher, Dairy-Free and Soy-Free. The products are prepared in small batches with minimal, all natural ingredients and can be found on many store shelves and via the GFB website (open here for complete product ingredients, nutritional info and pricing).
The GFB reps recently reached out to CeliacCorner to join them in celebrating National Gluten-Free Day and were kind to send along a few gluten-free snacks and oatmeals to sample. Since my family and I love trying out new GF products, we got straight to taste-testing. The four samples included:
(Certified non-GMO ingredients: Virginia peanuts, organic brown rice syrup, organic agave nectar, complete protein blend (brown rice protein, pea protein), organic dates, organic crisped brown rice, golden flaxseed, vanilla extract, sea salt. contains peanuts.)
This PB bar has a smooth texture similar to other protein bars, but also an added peanut/crisp rice crunch! Subtly sweet, chewy and moist, not too strong of peanut flavor, a bit like cookie dough, dense but not overly so. A great grab-and-go breakfast or snack option, especially when a protein pick-me-up is needed. Good source of fiber, iron and 12 grams of protein!
(Certified non-GMO ingredients: organic brown rice syrup, toasted coconut, organic dates, complete protein blend (brown rice protein, pea protein), organic agave nectar, organic dark chocolate (organic chocolate liquor, organic cane sugar, organic cocoa butter), organic crisped brown rice, cocoa powder, organic sunflower seeds, vanilla extract, golden flaxseed, natural coconut flavor, sea salt. contains coconut.)
Truffle-like, only healthier! Nutritionally packed with protein, fiber, calcium, iron and antioxidant rich dark chocolate, very delicious with a blend of coconut and chocolaty flavor and a good portion size. Save these for when a yum, healthy treat is desired. Check out the other five ‘Bite’ varieties including PB&J here.
We sampled two varieties, (Fruit, Nuts and Seeds and Apple Cinnamon) both made with certified gluten-free oats! All varieties are Certified Gluten-Free, Vegan, Soy-Free, Dairy-Free, Kosher)
Fruit, Nuts and Seeds
(Certified non-GMO ingredients: certified gluten-free oats, dried fruit (raisins, dates, cherries, rice flour, sunflower oil), raw hemp seed hearts, toasted seeds (sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, canola oil, salt), toasted nuts (almonds, cashews), golden flaxseed, sea salt, cinnamon.) contains cashews, almonds.)
Apple Cinnamon
(Certified non-GMO ingredients: certified gluten-free oats, chopped dates (dates, rice flour), dried apples, raw hemp seed hearts, toasted sunflower seeds (sunflower kernels, salt, canola oil), golden flaxseed, cinnamon, sea salt.)
Both very flavorful and super nutritious! The Fruit, Nuts & Seeds contains three different kinds of certified GF, high-protein oats, various fruits, nuts and seeds, raw hemp seed hearts, both sweet and crunchy, 8 grams of protein, one of our favorites! The Apple Cinnamon offers 6 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein and is delicious. These are easy to make (90 seconds), pack (the unique flat package fits easily into purse, backpack, etc. and then easily pops open) and no bowl required. Great for home, office and bringing along on a camping or hiking trip! Check out easy prep instruction video. Open here to see all varieties.
As we know, it’s sometimes a crap-shoot when selecting new GF products. Some are winners, others are not and money is often wasted when a product tastes awful and discarded. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the GFB’s products. Snacks and oatmeal made with simple, non-GMO ingredients providing nutritional value and pretty tasty too … a no brainer!
